PROFESSOR JOSEPH. O. AFOLAYAN APPOINTED ACTING VICE-CHANCELLOR OF LANDMARK UNIVERSITY
The authorities of Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Nigeria, have appointed Professor Joseph Olaseinde Afolayan of the Civil Engineering department as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution pending the decision of the Board of Regents on the appointment of a substantive helmsman, following the expiration of the tenure of the pioneer VC, Professor Mathew Ola-Rotimi Ajayi in July 2014.
A cerebral scholar and researcher of international acclaim, Professor Joseph Afolayan started his career at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State, where he bagged his B.Eng (Civil Eng.), M.Eng (Struct. Eng.) and PhD (Struct. Eng.) degrees in 1981, 1984 and 1994 respectively. He joined the Civil Engineering Department of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) as a Professor in 2005.
Specializing in Risk Analysis and Strategies for Management of Engineering Systems; Numerical Modeling with Computer Applications in Structural Engineering; and the use of Innovative Materials in Building Industry, Professor Afolayan has taught and supervised research works at the university level for over 30 years.
A recipient of numerous awards in recognition of his academic fecundity, research acumen and exemplary leadership, Professor Afolayan has published extensively in leading high-impact journals (locally and internationally), and he was an Academic Exchange Scholar at different universities in Germany. He is a member of leading professional organizations, some of which are the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), New York Academy of Sciences, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC), USA.
A seasoned administrator par excellence, Professor Joseph Afolayan has held several administrative positions, among which are – Head of Department (both at ABU and FUTA), Assistant Dean, Faculty of Engineering (ABU), Chairman, Postgraduate Studies Committee (ABU), and Dean, School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (FUTA). He has coordinated several projects and headed numerous academic, research and technical committees.
At the Faculty meeting held on 15thAugust, 2014 where he was officially introduced by the Pro-Chancellor, Past. Yemi Nathaniel, Professor Joseph Afolayan expressed his gratitude to the Chancellor of the University, Dr. David Oyedepo, for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth of the institution. He also urged all staff members of the institution to continue with the tradition of cooperation, diligence and sacrifice which has propelled the University to enviable heights.
