Best Private University in 2014


Covenant University, is a prestigious award to the institution as the Best Private University in Nigeria, 2014, making it the second time Covenant University would be winning the award. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Ayo, also bagged an award as the Best Vice Chancellor of Private University in Nigeria, 2014.
The award ceremony, which took place on December 9, 2014, at the prestigious conference room of the Vice Chancellor, was graced by dignitaries from the Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa and the Covenant University Community.

In his remarks at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Ayo, stated, “What a way to end the year. Undoubtedly, it is the Lord’s doing and it’s marvelous in our sight. To God be the glory for what he has done in the university and in the lives of the individuals he has chosen to work here. I want to deeply appreciate the Leadership of the Centre for Democratic Governance for this award. To us, it is timely; an attestation of our commitment towards becoming 1 of 10-in-10 and a validation of our preparations. I want to assure you that we will not rest on our oars; rather, we shall keep working to ensure that we rewrite the history of higher education in Nigeria.”

Professor Ayo also appreciated the books presented to him and the University library by the Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa and commended the author for a great story.

The Vice Chancellor, in his characteristic humble manner, dedicated his personal award to the entire CU community, appreciating them for believing in the vision, standing by it, and joining forces towards attaining it. He announced at the event that Covenant University would not be participating in the award henceforth, but would rather step the relationship up and focus its efforts on research and consultancy.

According to the Vice Chancellor, who is also an expert in ICT and E-governance, “In the University, we have a lot of research clusters, especially working in the areas of E-governance, E-government, E-democracy and E-voting. We have a lot of ICT based products ready. We have played our part and in order not to allow these research efforts to rot on the shelf, we have to go to town with what we have and work with the Centre to generate solutions for the Government- Local, State and Federal, to make life better for the generality of the populace. For instance, the preparations made for the forthcoming elections, from registration to voting; these are systems that we have already developed in the University.”

In his remarks, the Registrar, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo appreciated the group from the Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa, welcoming them to the leading private university in Nigeria.

“Covenant University is rated the number 1 Private University in Nigeria, number 2 University in Nigeria and number 25 in Africa by the 2014 Webometrics Ranking. So we can say that CU is a leading African University. CU has raised over ten thousand graduates across various disciplines. Today, we are glad about the proofs that our graduates are showcasing in the society. We give a wholesome education that allows them excel and go beyond what they learn in the university. By 2022, this university would have become one of the top rated universities in the world. CU’s mandate is not ordinary; it is a prophetic verdict,” he stated.

While making his presentation, the Director-General of the Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa, Dr. Dafe Akpocha, stated, “It was a rigorous and tedious research that we conducted in a bid to make a clear and fair judgment.
